Why Study Level 3 Mathematical Studies?

If you are studying A Levels with some mathematics in, or looking for a career which needs some maths, but don’t feel that A Level Maths is right for you then Core Mathematics is an ideal option. Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) is a new qualification designed for students who have achieved a grade 4 or above at GCSE. It helps to develop students’ mathematical skills and thinking and supports courses such as A Level Psychology, Sciences and Geography as well as technical and vocational qualifications. This qualification will count as an AS equivalent and is taken over two years with half the timetabled lessons of other A Level courses.

What will I study?

Mathematical Studies is taken over two years and is equivalent to an AS qualification.
The course content focuses on problem solving and approaches mathematics from an applied perspective.

If you want to keep studying Mathematics but hate Algebra then this is the course for you. It is specifically designed to explore real world applications of Mathematics. You will lean new skills like Fermi Estimation, and Critical Path analysis as well as discovering new ways to apply the Maths you encountered during your GCSEs.

Where can Core Maths take me?

Core Maths will support your learning in the mathematical aspects in a range of other 6^th Form courses – it will build your confidence with Maths and provide you with opportunity to show employers in a range of fields you can problem solve and thing logically. The course modules we teach are chosen specifically so that working in any senior role, in any industry where you will need to manage and lead large projects, you will have the skills to do so confidently.

What makes a good Mathematics student?

Good Mathematicians will be curious, enjoy problem solving and good at connecting ideas. Abstract thinking and the ability to communicate thinking clearly and logically are important.

How will I be assessed?

Homework tasks and PPE will help to focus your attention on areas of strength and development over the course of the two years in which you will be studying. There will be a final written external examination at the end of year 13 to determine your overall grade. There is no coursework with Mathematical Studies.

What are the entrance requirements?

• Grade 4 or above in Maths
• 5 or more grades 5-9; including equivalents across at least 5 subjects
• English Language Grade 4 or above
• Average GCSE GRADE of at least 4.0 (average of ALL GCSE full courses taken)
